A Blur

Another one taken from the SKEM blog -- this one is mostly so JenHen can see :)

This month has been nuts. Since I'm the company's recruiter, September (back-to-school month) really kicks my ass. There's a ton of school visits, interview scheduling and just logistics mania in general. On top of that, we had one of our off-site events, on-site - meaning, instead of renting a house somewhere not in NYC, we decided to stay in the city and do much of our brainstorming by pushing our desks up against the walls in harem style-tents. Tents that a few of us came in to construct over the weekend. One of them, we called the "sombrero love nest". Maybe these pics will help explain why:

Startups. So random and so awesome. So randomly awesome.

We also went to Greenwich Island in Connecticut for a day trip, which was literally an island. A really nice getaway from the city. Here's a picture of my company (I realize I may not have really talked a whole lot about my company before, but they've become a pretty big part of my life):

But aside from seasonal recruiting madness, Fernando came to visit the city late this month. He decided to come into town for a startup career fair, and I asked him to stay a bit longer to help me recuperate after my wisdom teeth surgery...coming up this Friday argh. I have four big honkin impacted ones coming out, and I'm expecting to be delirious for most of the weekend hah

Well, I thought I had more exciting things to post aside from my company and my wisdom teeth, but this month has just been such a blur. There is one more thing I'd love to share with you guys, and I hope you don't judge, but have y'all heard Carly Rae Jepsen's new CD? IT'S AMAZING and free on Spotify. I highly recommend that you blast it wear heels and a glass of wine and just dance in front of your mirror tonight.

love,
sLee

Update: the wisdom teeth procedure went by without a hitch. Big ass doses of ibuprofen, a comical ice pack that wrapped around my head like I was suffering from mumps, and few delirious nights with Oxycodone made the whole recuperation process pretty painless and easy.

NYC: A Snapshot

What I'm listening to: A Fine Frenzy - "Sailingsong", "Electric Twist", "New Heights"

This is a post taken from the SKEM blog as well.

Where: Madison Square Garden
Exactly where: perched on a bench dedicated to "Missy" Nord Haggerty and her dog Cosimo

It's a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The kind of cloudless day that comes only after a muddy grey day of thunderstorms and sticky humidity. It's sweater weather, and the park is lovingly dappled by the sun. Every so often, a chilly breeze rustles through the still-green leaves on the trees while the fallen leaves on the stone walkway, those first casualties of autumn, scatter across my bare toes. This is as placid as Manhattan gets - the incessant buzz of traffic rolls on in the background, sounding almost like an ocean or the whir of an air conditioner.

This bench is perfectly positioned. There's enough warmth from the sunlight laced through the foliage above, and I'm in one of the park's many optimal people-watching posts. Feeling slightly like a hipster, I take out my Moleskine because I want to remember this moment and share it. A flashmob has just materialized to my left by the fountain. Cheers erupt and passersby-turned-photographers flash a staccato of bright lights. Meanwhile, just like out of the movies, Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" comes blaring from old speakers to my right, where also, the smell of Shake Shack's burgers comes wafting. The prospect of picking up a salty caramel custard from here lingers in the back of my mind, but I don't want this moment to end. This bench is coveted, and I don't want to lose it just yet.

Stylish younger ladies walk by in the NY fall uniform: tight black pants, knee high leather boots (preferably by Tory Burch), and a chambray shirt. Older couples pass by with baguettes poking out of paper grocery sacks from Mario Batali's Eataly next door - the makings of a perfect picnic. Younger couples walk by hand in hand, enjoying the day's rose-colored lenses. Lone tourists with embellished jean pockets and hefty cameras hurry by, map of NYC in hand. Dogs of all kinds trot by: grouchy mini schnauzers, white coated samoyeds, weimaraners, stout French bulldogs, spoiled little Yorkies, Australian collies, and blue-eyed mutts. Three different men of varying degrees of hipster saunter by with their guitars. And of course, a few crazies mutter by. One man yells at the trashcan next to my bench, calling Frank Sinatra an asshole who never gets off the stage. Another babbles gibberish into a broken Nokia phone. No matter where you are in NYC, you can't avoid the crazies, but I couldn't imagine it any other way.

Moments like this make me feel like I could live in NYC forever.
